Date: 8/13/00 Time: 20:00 Lat: 29°54' Long: 88°56' The first thing this morning after I woke up Grant and I went and did the C.T.D. (conductivity, temperature, and depth). Then we took the water samples that were collected from the C.T.D. and took nutrient samples. Yesterday when we took the samples they were only from the most two depths. Today we took the samples from 5 different depths. After we finished filtering the water I noticed that the filters today seemed to be much green than the ones from yesterdays samples. Again today I helped Heather, John, and Robin with the deep water, carbon nitrogen and zooplankton lipid samples. When we took the lipid samples yesterday we had a very large abundance of crab zoea on the filters. Today after we filtered the water the filters were greener and didn’t have any little crab zoea on them like yesterday. Today we headed out for the wide-open waters. Our boat has not been very still today, compared to yesterday when it was extremely calm. Once we hit the open water there were larger waves that kind of started to toss the boat around. We also hardly saw any jellyfish in our first station today. It was almost like all the jellyfish were at our stations from yesterday. There hundreds of jellyfish everywhere yesterday and today they were nowhere to be found in the morning. After lunch we started to see a few but it wasn’t like anything yesterday. Also the water around the stations that we were and are at today seemed to be getting lighter and bluer in color. Hopefully we are heading for nice and clear water in these days to come. Questions At out first station today why did we only see one or two
jellyfish and yesterday they were everywhere in the water? Why are out filters greener today than they were yesterday? As we get farther out into the Gulf of Mexico why is the
water getting rougher? Why did the jellyfish populate the stations we were at
yesterday more than then the stations we were at today? How far out in the Gulf do you have to be until you are in
clear water? How many types of jellyfish do not sting with their
tentacles? How big can a jellyfish get? What is the largest species of jellyfish?
